Hollywed is a destination wedding planner based in Crete, working with international couples planning weddings in Greece.
Being based here means we approach Crete differently. We are not beginning with a list of popular wedding venues and asking which one you like best. We begin with the wedding itself: how many people are coming, how they will spend the weekend, what kind of ceremony matters to you, how private you want the celebration to feel and where the investment should be concentrated.
Crete can accommodate very different kinds of weddings. An intimate church ceremony followed by dinner for thirty people requires one kind of setting. A private estate wedding built almost entirely for the occasion requires another. A three-day celebration with several hundred guests — including an Indian or South Asian wedding with multiple ceremonies and events — asks considerably more of the destination.
The setting has to make sense before anything is designed.
01 / THE VENUE
Choosing a Wedding Venue in Crete
A venue should solve more problems than it creates.
That sounds obvious, but it is easy to fall in love with a property before understanding what producing a wedding there actually involves.
For us, venue research is never simply about appearance. We look at privacy, guest count, accommodation, ceremony possibilities, food and beverage, music, the spaces available before and after dinner, and how much needs to be brought in to create the wedding properly.
Sometimes the answer is a private estate. Sometimes it is a resort. Sometimes an existing hospitality property is more interesting than somewhere marketed specifically for weddings.
The right choice depends on the celebration.
PRIVATE ESTATE WEDDINGS
A private estate wedding in Crete offers something hotels rarely can: the ability to create a world for one night without sharing it with anyone else.
That freedom is particularly attractive when the couple wants the design, dinner and party to feel entirely their own.
But a beautiful estate is not automatically a good wedding venue.
We assess what the property can support before developing the creative direction around it. An estate requiring substantial temporary infrastructure can be extraordinary, but only when that additional production is understood from the beginning and allowed for in the budget.
RESORT WEDDINGS
There are weddings where the more considered decision is to make things easier.
A resort can allow guests to arrive, settle in and remain together for several days. Welcome drinks, the wedding and a day-after event may all happen within the same property while still feeling distinct.
That can be particularly valuable for larger destination weddings, families travelling with children and celebrations with several events.
We look closely at privacy, event restrictions, outside suppliers and whether the property can offer the level of exclusivity the wedding requires.
The fact that a hotel hosts weddings is not enough.
02 / THE CEREMONY
Wedding Ceremonies in Crete
The ceremony is one of the first things we establish because it changes the way the rest of the wedding is planned.
In Crete, couples may consider an Orthodox, Catholic, civil or symbolic wedding ceremony. None of them is simply another version of the same event.
An Orthodox wedding already has a strong identity.
For that reason, we tend to be restrained when designing around an Orthodox church. The aim is not to make a centuries-old ceremony look like an editorial set.
It is to understand where design can add something and where it should leave the ritual alone.
For guests arriving from abroad who may never have attended an Orthodox wedding, we sometimes incorporate a small ceremony note explaining the key moments. It allows them to follow what is happening without changing the ceremony itself.
For a Greek Orthodox wedding in Crete, religious eligibility and documentation are always established with the relevant church authority before the ceremony is considered final.
GREEK ORTHODOX
A Catholic wedding in Crete begins with the religious requirements.
The couple will usually work through their home parish while the documentation and permissions are coordinated with the Catholic authority in Crete.
We prefer to establish this early. Once the church and ceremony are resolved, the rest of the day can be developed with much more freedom.
CATHOLIC
For some couples, a symbolic ceremony is exactly what a destination wedding needs.
There are no prescribed vows or religious structure, which means the ceremony can be shaped around the couple, their families and the traditions they actually want to include.
It can also take place within the wedding venue itself rather than requiring a separate ceremony location.
Many international couples complete the legal marriage at home and hold the ceremony they consider their wedding in Crete.
SYMBOLIC
It is possible for foreign couples to marry legally in Greece through a civil ceremony.
The administrative route depends on individual circumstances, so we establish the requirements for the specific couple rather than working from a standard document checklist.

The Wedding Weekend
A destination wedding rarely starts when the ceremony begins. Guests have already travelled, checked into hotels, met one another and begun experiencing the wedding before anyone walks down an aisle. We take that seriously.
For some weddings, the weekend is very simple: an easy welcome dinner, the wedding, and lunch the next day. For others, it is considerably more layered.
The important thing is that each event has a reason to exist.
A welcome evening should not feel like a smaller rehearsal of the wedding. The day after should not require everyone to dress for another reception. And the main wedding should still feel like the moment the weekend has been moving toward.
We plan the events together, but we do not make them compete with one another.
04 / INDIAN & SOUTH ASIAN WEDDINGS
A Different Kind of Wedding Weekend
Indian and South Asian weddings bring a different rhythm to destination planning. A celebration may unfold over several days, with a Mehndi, Haldi, Sangeet, wedding ceremony and reception — each with its own purpose, guest experience and production requirements.
Crete can work particularly well for this scale of wedding when the venue is chosen carefully. A resort can keep guests together while offering several settings across the weekend. Private venues can also be introduced for individual events when a change of atmosphere is important.
For us, the planning starts with the full sequence rather than treating every event separately.
We look at where guests will stay, how many events the property needs to accommodate, the requirements of the ceremonies, catering, entertainment, transportation and how much time is available to change a space between one celebration and the next.
The design is developed in the same way. There should be a relationship between the events, but they do not need to look alike.
For a multi-day Indian wedding in Crete, the real advantage comes when venue, accommodation, planning and design are considered together from the beginning.
05 / WHEN TO MARRY
The Best Time for a Wedding in Crete
There is a reason many destination weddings in Crete fall between late spring and early autumn, but we would not automatically choose August simply because it feels the most “Greek summer.”
May and June can be excellent for weddings that need long days without the most intense heat.
July and August give the full summer experience, but ceremony time and guest comfort become much more important.
September is particularly strong. It still feels like summer, but there is often more flexibility in how the day can unfold.
October can also work beautifully when the venue has a proper alternative for weather rather than a contingency that feels like a compromise.
The date should ultimately be chosen alongside the venue, not separately from it.
A 5pm ceremony in one property may make perfect sense and be entirely wrong somewhere else.

What Does a Destination Wedding in Crete Cost?
There is no meaningful figure based on guest count alone.
A resort may include much of what the wedding needs; a private estate may require considerably more production. For multi-day celebrations, the investment is spread across several distinct events.
We establish the financial framework early, then decide where the budget will have the greatest impact.
Not everything needs equal investment. It needs the right investment.

We guide you through the budget, the right venue, establish the ceremony, select the supplier team and build the planning structure around the wedding. From there, we develop the design and manage the production through the wedding weekend itself.
Because we are based in Crete, we are able to look at the island from inside the planning process rather than simply as a destination we arrive at for the wedding.
We work with a limited number of couples each year and offer full planning and design rather than a menu of partial services.
There is one point of contact and one view of the entire celebration.

For full planning, 12–18 months is a comfortable starting point for many weddings. Larger celebrations, multi-day events and highly specific venue requirements benefit from beginning earlier.

It depends heavily on the venue, guest count, number of events and level of production. A private estate and an established hotel can have very different cost structures even with the same number of guests.
